Tumbleweed Song

by Jimmy Wendt

about

Based on a true overcoming adversity story, the Tumbleweed Song captures the essence of heartfelt Christmas memories, and reminds us all of the unmistakable greatness of the family bond during the holidays.

Jimmy Wendt explains, "As a kid my family struggled financially and emotionally. Despite the fact we couldn’t afford a Christmas tree, my Mom had us get the best Christmas the world had ever seen: a tumbleweed, sprayed with snow, with blinking lights and ornaments. My sister and I loved getting tumbleweeds for Christmas, one of my fondest memories growing up. We were proud of that 5 foot weed on the living room floor."

Wendt's Mom Carolyn suffered from life-long depression, after her son died in a tragic accident. "She taught us the best things are free" says Wendt. Every year we were reminded of that as we chased tumbleweeds down Newport Avenue in Tustin in December as the Santa Ana winds were blowing. The whole experience lifted us up as a family.

The Tumbleweed Song is Written and sung by Jimmy Wendt. Music, background vocals, produced by Lacey Johnson.

lyrics

Mom lost her first son
before I was born
Ev’ry holiday season
Her heart was retorn

We didn't have much
Her pain you could feel
Got a paper route
For the ‘lectric bill

Said "Mom I wanna buy you
A sweet Christmas tree"
She said "nah let’s get the best one
the world's never seen"

Chorus:
Santa Ana winds
Howlin' blowin’
Right down Newport street
Laughin' chasin' tumbleweeds
Took one home
Full of love
Gave it a shove
Through the front door
Seems crazy
We gathered on the floor
A site to see that tumbleweed
We loved it more

We sprayed it with white snow
Put on some lights and balls
Hung up the stockings
And Christmas cards

A shiny star on top
Lit up the gifts below
Who knew a dusty weed could be a
Blessing in our home

At night we'd watch
The twinkling lights glow
We ate butterscotch
By our big ball of snow

(repeat chorus)

When you get smacked down
You gotta rise above
When Santa comes around
You gotta share the love
Sometimes in life
The best things are free
Go find your tumbleweed
Make Christmas memories
Christmas memories

Now I've got a
family of my own
Carolyn and JB now
Are lookin' down

Hope you you don't mind
Gotta a new tradition
Cinnamon rolls 'n cocoa
On Christmas morn'

Mom the best gift
You ever gave to me
Was makin' a ball of thorns
The best Christmas tree

(repeat chorus)

At night we'd watch
The twinkling lights glow
We ate butterscotch by
Our big ball of snow.

Jimmy Wendt Los Angeles, California

Always driven by music, I started pursuing a passion for songwriting later in life. There is something magical about the progression of a song. I tend to start with lyrics and over time a melody will manifest itself. Once in the studio, witnessing a song come to life is an incredible feeling. Enjoy! Open to working with other artists & brands. Proceeds support my girls' college funds. ... more
